3. Educational Qualifications (As of August 1, 2026)
The best part about the SSC CGL exam? It does not care if you scored 45% or 95% in your college degree. It does not matter if you did BA, B.Sc, B.Com, or B.Tech.
For almost all posts, a simple passing Bachelor’s Degree from any recognized university is all you need.
However, there are three highly specialized posts that require a specific academic background:
Post Name
Essential Qualification (Mandatory)
All Other Posts (General)
Bachelor's Degree in any discipline from a recognized University.
Junior Statistical Officer (JSO)
Bachelor's Degree in any subject with at least 60% in Mathematics at the 12th standard level. OR A Bachelor's Degree with Statistics as one subject in all three years of the degree course.
Statistical Investigator Gr. II
Bachelor's Degree with Statistics as one subject in all three years of the degree course.
Assistant Audit Officer (AAO)
Bachelor's Degree. Desirable: CA, CS, MBA (Finance), or a Master's in Commerce.
(Important: If you are in your final year of college, you can still apply! However, you MUST ensure that your final result is declared on or before the cutoff date, which is expected to be August 1, 2026).
4. How Many Attempts for SSC CGL?
This is easily the best piece of news for SSC CGL aspirants: There is absolutely no limit on the number of attempts!
Unlike the UPSC Civil Services exam, which caps how many times you can take the test, the Staff Selection Commission does not count your previous attempts. You can sit for the exam as many times as you want to improve your score or upgrade your post.
The only barrier that stops you from applying is the maximum age limit. As long as your age falls within the eligible bracket for a specific post (and you meet the educational criteria), you are completely free to fill out the form year after year.
5. SSC CGL Nationality
A candidate must be one of the following to be eligible to apply:
- A Citizen of India.
- A subject of Nepal or Bhutan.
- A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st of January 1962, intending to settle permanently.
- A Person of Indian Origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or East African countries with the intention of permanently settling in India.
(Note: Categories 2, 3, and 4 must have a Certificate of Eligibility officially issued by the Government of India).
What Happens if You Apply But Don't Meet the Criteria?
The SSC is incredibly strict during the Document Verification (DV) stage. If you apply for a post like JSO without having 60% in 12th-grade Math, or if you calculate your age wrong, you will be disqualified immediately, even if you topped the Tier 2 exam. Always cross-check your details before hitting "Submit" on the application form.
